Breaking news! Butch Davis to North Carolina

CarolinaBlue.com has been told by sources that we trust that North Carolina and Butch Davis have agreed to terms to make Davis the next coach at North Carolina.

    CNN/SI

According to sources, Davis will likely be the next coach at North Carolina.
At this point we are cautious to describe this as a complete "done deal" as several things may still be in play over the weekend before this becomes finalized. Still, we believe an official announcement could come as early as next week.

We are being cautious because we respect you, our readers, and respect the school.

Davis, 54, was previously head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2001-2004.

Prior to that, Davis had a highly successful sting as head coach at the University of Miami (1995-2001), where he took control of a program on probation and riddled with problems on and off the field.

By the time he left, players were graduating and discipline had been instilled within the football program and Davis compiled a 51-20 record and was the architect behind the Hurricane teams that won the national title game in 2001 and lost in overtime in the 2002 national title game.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed but CarolinaBlue.com sources earlier in the week said that North Carolina was prepared to offer nearly $2 million annually for Davis, who will widely be viewed as the best potential coach currently available to the college ranks. Since his dismissal from the Browns, Davis name has been linked everywhere from Arkansas to North Carolina to even Michigan State this week.

Stay tuned to CarolinaBlue.com for more on this breaking situation

I have to say I am surprised by this. I expected Davis to replace Coker (and he still could).

well...this makes UNC a hotbed, good for the ACC, bad for the opposing fans...UNC has the dough to play with

id expect Greg Schiano and Bobby Petrino to be at the front for the Miami position

I really cant see Patrino coming to Miami. I think he has 10 years or so left on his contract with Louisville, no way that happens. As for Schiano, he is being PC right now but I have a feeling he will stay at Rutgers. Not that it will happen but I believe Miami better take a good long look at the titans coaches as soon as the season ends.

Mega, are you suggesting we get a coach from the Titans who ruvs fried rice and robster craws?

I'd love to have Norm Chow as the next coach at Miami, but we'd definitely have to pay him a bunch of money. My guess is that the next coach we get will be paid much less than Coker currently is per year, and he will likely be a lower profile assistant with Miami ties or an old Miami type philosophy (tough players, speed kills, runs a loose ship). Don't know who fits that really (maybe Mike Leach or Gary Patterson, even though they're head guys) but I don't really see us getting a big name coach because of the money issues tied to Coker's buyout. You've got to cut costs somewhere, and if you haven't noticed, that's been the motivation behind a lot of the recent moves by Shalala and Dee.

I feel we've got a better shot with Petrino's brother who is his offensive coordinator at UL than Petrino himself. Schiano is a good ex-Miami coach who has taken the old philosophies up to Rutgers with him, and he's having success...I don't know that he'll want to leave anytime soon, as he now has their recruiting going in the right direction and has his staff pretty solidified. He may want to stay.

Id take fisher or chow, either would be fine

As far as cutting cost, being that coker wasnt in the top 10 in money, I would think that they wont be able to hire ANY coach for less than what he is making. Its 2006, they better ante up. Schiano is the right kind of coach but Im sorta skeptical about him even. Hes 8-0 against some of the worst teams in the country. Rutgers is going to get blasted in the next few weeks. I dont think they are even close to a top 25 team. While I think Schiano is a much better coach than Coker, I feel he is more like a Les Miles type. He can take a bad team and make them better but I dont see him taking a good/great team and making them a champion. I really have no faith in Dee to hire a decent coach. I can only hope and pray that Irvin, Kosar, Kelly, etc have alot of say in who is hired.

I don't care what sort of weird twisted joke that is but you burn in hell you racist son of a [censored].

This isn't the first time you've said something completely culturally insensitive (I remember speaking in jest about Catholics from you).
